JOB DESCRIPTION: City Planner
City Planner will work under the direction of the City Clerk. The City Planner performs responsible,
professional planning activities involving current planning,
long-range planning, and special projects; and performs related work as assigned. The City Planner
will process and review site plans, land use, zoning, variance, special exception, and other
development applications; review building permit plans for federal, state, local and zoning code
compliance, provide technical assistance to the public, and perform tasks associated with
Comprehensive Plan, Land Development Regulations, and their preparation and implementation. The
City Planner also serves as a back – up to the front office when needed. Such as receiving payments, establishing new water accounts and various
other tasks. The City Planner will also be crossed trained for Code Enforcement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
▪ Application of land use, physical and environmental design, zoning theory, and
practices to complex situations involving development project review, zoning code administration
and policy development.
▪ Understand and apply those aspects of federal, state and local laws, regulations,
policies, procedures and standards pertaining to the planning process.
▪ Regulations, code, polices, and procedures regarding signs.
• Applicants Must Possess Ability To:
▪ Interpret maps, site, and building plans and specifications, graphs and
statistical data.
▪ Research, analyze and summarize planning data both manually and with computer
programs.
▪ Interpret and understand engineering and architectural plans, concepts and
methodologies.
▪ Prepare clear and concise technical documents, reports, correspondence and other
written materials, including staff reports
to the Planning Commission, Mayor, and the City Council.

▪ Exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
▪ Instruct others in work procedures and provide specific project direction.
▪ Establish and maintain effective working relationship with diverse interest groups
(for example: developers, property owners, elected officials, staff, community representatives, the
public, etc.)
▪ Discuss proposed developments and variance approvals with municipal and regional
staff, and local interest groups.
▪ Coordinate draft plan applications with surveyors, engineers and other consultants
involved with the land development process.
▪ Provide assistance to developer and builder clients seeking draft approval for
land developments.
▪ Research, prepare and present reports with respect to development proposals and
related planning amendments.
▪ Prepare, submit, and present land severance and minor variance applications.
▪ Perform responsible and complex current and long-term planning assignments.
▪ Must be computer literate and skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Photoshop.
▪ Prepare clear visual displays.
▪ Present ideas persuasively.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to
perform essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative to the

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
• A valid Florida driver’s license is required and a satisfactorily background check,
may be required to furnish an automobile for use on city
business for which mileage compensation will be paid.
